Dolphins Faced Tough Wildwood Manor

By Doll Finn
Senior Dolphin Correspondent

The meet against Wildwood Manor was pretty much as tough as expected. Despite some strong performances, the Bannockburn Dolphins were never really competitive against one of the stronger teams in the division.

The 175 graduated relay neatly summed up the meet. For the boys, Wildwood took first even though its relay was slower than its seed time while the relay of Andrew O’Brien, Gideon Helf, Jeffrey Su and Will Spooner beat their seed time but still finished second. The team of Cole Wassiliew, Lucca Scott, Jonathan Rufino and Max Kroloff was fourth.

For the girls, the team of Evelyn Wassiliew, Shifra Eskin, Katya Damskey and Darby LeFaivre also beat their seed time, but that was only good enough for third. The team of Maya Lall, Katie MacIsaac, Danielle Lair Ferrari and Taylor Pyle was fourth.

In short, the Dolphins had some incredible performances. But it just wasn’t enough at this home meet. We highlight some of those swims in today’s column.

In under 8 25 free, Will Spooner took 3/10 of a second off to finish second with Max Kroloff in third.

Darby LeFaivre hit an all star time in 25 free and took nearly 3/10 of a second off to finish second. Taylor Pyle also took about 1.2 seconds off her 25 free time while Maggie Southworth dropped .45 seconds.
In boys 13/14 free, Jeffrey Su set an All Star time and dropped another .82 seconds from his 50 free time.

Gideon Helf dropped nearly half a second in 50 free for 11/12 boys while Cecily McArdle dropped nearly 8/10 of a second for the girls 11/12 50 free. Cecily later would drop about 8/10 of a second in 25 back.

Swimming in 15/18, Alex Burbelo dropped almost two seconds in the 100 free despite only being 14.

Moving into 13/14 IM, Jeffrey Su dropped 2.31 seconds for second and an All Star time.  Jeffrey also dropped about half a second in 50 back to take the win.

For 25 back, Will Spooner dropped nearly half a second to finish second for boys under 8.

Anna-Louise Cobau took more than 1.2 seconds off her 25 back stroke for 9/10 girls while Jacob Seiberg was the top boy for the Dolphins in 9/10 back.

And full credit to Mariana Pennybacker who as a 13 year old swam the 15/18 100 back and finished fifth, ahead of a Wildwood Manor swimmer who was two years older. We also would note that in the boys version of this event, both Hugo Burbelo and Alex Burbelo swam at 15/18 despite only being 14.

In the 15/18 100 IM, John Janezich dropped 3.3 seconds to win. Max Kroloff in under 8 boys took 3.3 seconds off 25 breast stroke. For the girls, Taylor Pyle dropped more than half a second.

Shifra Eskin took first in the 50 breast stroke with an All Star time while Colleen Zeugin and Cecily McArdle both dropped close to a second on their times for fifth and sixth.

In the Girls 13/14 50 breast, the Dolphins took second through fourth with Danielle Lair Ferrari, Alexa Crist, and Caitlin Ryan. Jessie Kline took second for the girls 15/18 100 breast with credit to Sarah Cobau and Mariana Pennybacker for swimming up in that race.

The final stoke is always fly. The Dolphins started on a positive note will Will Spooner taking first for Under 8 in an All Star time. He won by 1/100 of a second, which is really, really, really close. Darby LeFaivre also set an under 8 All Star time but came in third.

Other notable performances in fly include Jeffrey Su taking first in 13/14 boys 50 fly in an All Star time while Jonathan Rufino dropped nearly a second off his time.  Katya Damskey and Danielle Lair Ferrari grabbed first and second in girls 13/14 50 fly with Gabriela Helf dropping almost a second off her time.

In 15/18 50 fly, John Janzich took first in an All Star time with Jessie Kline and Bryna Steele taking second and third for the girls. Sarah Cobau competing up an age group dropped close to two seconds from her time.

Sing, Sing a Song…..

Can you sing?

Don’t worry about it. If history is an indicator, this Thursday’s karaoke will be more about style over substance. And frankly, it is really about lots of fun as the swim season winds down.

So make sure you come down to the pool Thursday at 7 pm after practice and see what all the fuss is about.

Bannockburn Just Short vs. Little Falls

By Doll Finn
Senior Dolphin Correspondent

Swimming can come down to just 1/100th of a second.

Just asking the Bannockburn Dolphins, which fell on Saturday to Little Falls in a match that appeared much closer than the final 43 point margin would have indicated.

It appeared that just a few more surges to the wall could have well tilted the meet in favor of the Dolphins. Yet when you enter the season as the lowest ranked team in the division, it means that there is no margin for error. And that is how it played out at Little Falls.

The meet started with two hotly contested 100 IMs. Shifra Eskin took second for the girls with Katie MacIsaac in third and Maya Lall in sixth.  Gideon Helf missed first place by half a finger with Andrew O’Brien in second and Lucca Scott in fifth.

In both 200 Medley Relays, Bannockburn took second and third. For the girls, Elena Palermo, Hannah Melrod, Jessie Kline and Bryna Steele were followed by the team of Samantha Kline, Alexa Crist, Gabriela Helf and Caitlin Ryan. For the boys, the team of Jack MacIsaac, Jack Blazes, John Janezich and Vince Steis was followed by the team of Owen Wassiliew, Alex Burbelo, Ethan Wendel and Alex Butman.

There are two other IMs. In the 13/14 IM. Jeffrey Su scored an all star time and the win. Jack Blazes took third and Ray Crist was sixth. For the girls, Katya Damskey took second, Danielle Lair-Ferrari was third and Caitlin Ryan was fifth.

For the 15/18 IM, John Janezich took first by a second with Owen Wassiliew and Vince Steis in fifth and sixth. Jessie Kline took third with Bryna Steele in fifth.

It has become almost a cliché in the Dolphin Times to argue that meets are won and lost based on the eight and unders. They are always the heart of the team and often the margin in the 175 relays at the end of the meet.

For this meet, the under eights were critical. Will Spooner took first in 25 free with Max Kroloff in third and Anthony Noya in sixth and Aidan O’Brien in seventh. For the girls in 25 free, Darby LeFaivre took first with Taylor Pyle in fifth and Annie Kessner in sixth. Maya Clancy got eighth, Clara Baisinger-Rosen was ninth and Nadia Lall took 12th.

In 25 back, Will got his second win of the day. James LeFaivre was fifth and Alex Spooner was sixth. Maya Clancy took second for the girls with Annie in fourth and Taylor in fifth.

Max kept up the under 8 boys winning ways in the 25 breast with James and Aidan in third and fourth. Max won by two seconds. Darby also continued to win with first in 25 breast. She was an impressive 10 seconds faster than anyone else in the heat and scored an all star time. She led off a Dolphin sweep of the event with Taylor Celia getting second and third.

In 25 fly, Will got his third win as part of a Dolphin sweep. Max was second and Aidan was third. Darby easily won the 25 fly as none of the Little Falls swimmers were legal in the stroke.

Yet the top performance of the day may have gone to five year old Nadia Lall who swam a legal 25 fly to finish second. Nadia initially was expected to be on pre-team this season but she clearly takes too much after her sister for that.

In 9/10, it was going to be a challenge. Andrew O’Brien got an all star time in 50 free but still came in third. Cole Wassiliew was fourth, Matthew Wu was eighth, Meyer Eskin was 10th, Jack Burke was 11th and Jacob Seiberg was 12th though his goggles came in 13th. For the girls, Evelyn Wassiliew was second, Maya Lall was fourth, Ella Scott took eight, Sam MacIsaac was 10th, Lucy Lauren Caddell was 11th and Anna-Louise Cobau was 12th.

For 25 back, Matthew took fourth, Jacob took fifth and Meyer was sixth. On the girls side, Evelyn was second, Maya was third and Ella was sixth.

Andrew got another all star time, but finished second in 25 breast. Cole and Meyer were third and fourth.  Maya took second for the girls. This theme continue with 25 fly as Andrew got an all star time and second place. Evelyn was second for the girls.

The 11/12 age bracket was more of a mixed bag. Gideon Helf took first in 50 free with Ali Shafi in fourth, Lucca Scot in fifth, Tyler Crist in sixth  Morgan White in seventh and Duncan Ryan in eighth. For the girls, Shifra had a strong swim but still finished second. Colleen Zeugin took seventh.

In 50 back, Gideon and Lucca were one and two while Katie MacIsaac was second and Colleen was fifth. Shifra and Katie took first and second in 50 breast with Gideon taking first for the boys and Morgan White in third. Ali took fourth.

Lucca won the 50 fly with Duncan in third. Shifra took second for the girls.

Bannockburn fought back in the 13/14 races with Jeffrey Su and Ray Crist taking first and second in 50 free. Jack Blazes, Jack MacIsaac, Alex Butman and Ethan Wendel were fifth through eighth. Jeffrey won the 50 back in an all star time with Jack Blazes in fourth and Ray in fifth.

Jack Blazes took first in the 50 breast with Jeffrey Su in second and Jack McIsaac in fifth. Ray took second in 50 fly.

Little Fall’s Rachel Danegger and the Dolphin’s Katya Damskey are winter swim buddies, but they were rivals on Saturday. Rachel used a strong final push to out touch Katya in 50 free. Danielle Lair-Ferrari took third with Caitlin Ryan in fourth, Gabriella Helf in eighth, Mariana Pennybacker in 10th and Naomi Seiberg in 11th.  In 50 back, Katya took first with Gabriela in fifth.

Danielle took third in 50 breast with Alexa Crist in fourth and Caitlin in fifth. Katya was second in 50 fly with an all star time.

It is always amazing to watch the 15/18 year olds fly through the water.  John Janezich scored an all star time and the win in 100 free.  Vince Steis took sixth. Owen Wassiliew, James Cobau and Alex Burbelo all swam up in this age group and they took eighth, 10th and 11th.

In the 100 back, John again won with an all star time. Vince was fourth and Owen took fifth. For 100 breast, the Dolphins used the three swimmer who were swimming up in age group. Owen took fourth while Alex and Hugo Burbelo tied for fifth. John continued to win, taking first in the 50 fly. Vince was fifth and James was sixth.

For the girls, Bryna Steele was third, just 3/100 of a second out of second. Jessie Kline was fourth, Hannah Melrod was fifth, Elena Palermo was seventh, Samantha Kline was 10th and Sarah Cobau swam up in age group to take 12th. In 100 back, Jessie was second, Bryna took fifth and Hannah had sixth. Jessie took third in the 50 fly.

The meet always ends with the 175 relay. The Dolphin team of Andrew O’Brien, Gideon Helf, Jeffrey Su and Will Spooner took first  while the team of Cole Wassiliew, Ali Shafi, Ray Crist and Max Kroloff was fourth.

The team of Evelyn Wassiliew, Shifra Eskin, Katya Damskey and Darby LeFaivre took second while the team of Maya Lall, Katie MacIsaac, Danielle Lair-Ferrari and Taylor Pyle was fourth.

Dolphins Beat Thunder; Finish B Meet

By Haydn the Dog
Dolphin Editor in Chief

The Bannockburn Dolphins traveled over the One Lane Bridge for the annual B meet against Palisades.

Yet the real fight was against the weather. This editor saw many parents constantly checking the weather maps on their phones. Despite the constant threat of storms, the Dolphins finished the meet and all but the automation team and B meet representatives should have had plenty of time to get home before the weather hit.

Most Bannockburn Dolphins entered the meet with at least one prior time in each stroke. This permits Dolphin Times to resume its tradition of highlighting those who had some impressive time improvements in this meet.

All of the following swimmers had at least a 5% time improvement in the events that are highlighted:

·      Hugo Burbelo took 3.24 seconds off on 50 back.
·      Jack Burke took 2.98 seconds off on 50 free.
·      Timothy Burke took 31.81 seconds off his 25 free time.
·      Lauren Caddell took 2.82 seconds off 50 free.
·      Maya Clancy took 1.86 seconds off 25 free and 7.92 seconds off 25 back.
·      Anna-Louise Cobau took 2.88 seconds off 25 breast.
·      Alexa Crist took 2.01 seconds off 50 free and 7.95 seconds off 100 IM.
·      Nora Feldbaum took 2.79 seconds off 25 free.
·      Thaddeus Felten took 3.02 seconds off 25 back.
·      Darby LeFaivre took 1.88 seconds off 25 breast.
·      Samantha MacIsaac took 7.81 seconds off 100 IM.
·      Andrew O’Brien took 5.67 seconds off 100 IM.
·      Erin Pollack took 5.24 seconds off 50 free.
·      Caitlin Ryan took 4.88 seconds off 100 IM.
·      Jacob Seiberg dropped 3.64 seconds on 25 breast.
·      Sofia Silvertooth dropped 3.78 seconds on 50 free.
·      Alex Spooner dropped 1.96 seconds in 25 free.

Look for updated results next week from our next B meet. What we do is compare the time at the B meet against their prior best time for the season. Then we highlight everyone who had an improvement of at least 5%. It is true that 5% is a big number for the older kids, but B meets are geared toward newer and/or younger swimmers. So there are often a lot of 5% improvements.

The software Dolphin Times uses is not the greatest so there is always the risk that we miss something. Please email the Dolphin Times at haydnthedogseiberg@gmail.com with anything we accidently excluded and we will get it in the next edition.

Dolphins Take Second Loss to Thunder in 2014

By Walter Tu Kold
Dolphin Correspondent

Darn that summer weather.

The thunder rolled into Bannockburn around 4:30 pm on Wednesday ahead of this week’s B meet vs. Somerset. As some may recall, the Derecho caused the last home meet v. Somerset to be canceled as our pool didn’t have power.

The hope was to wait out the storm and it appeared to stop thundering around 5:45, which would have meant the meet could have started around 6:15. There was a growing sense of excitement among the scores of swimmers.

Or was that dread because they all had just downed slices of peperoni or cheese pizza during the delay, which meant no one really wanted to compete with a stomach full of food.

In either event, the weather did not cooperate and the meet had to be canceled. Despite the loss of the meet, this reporter was impressed with how the swimmers rallied by devouring 16 pizzas within the first 15 minutes of their delivery. That is a team that is destined for glory.

Bannockburn Keeps it Close at Half, but Loses Momentum in Lakelands Loss

By Doll Finn
Senior Dolphin Correspondent

This might be best known as the All Star qualifying meeting.

Darby LeFaivre, Andrew O’Brien, and Jeffrey Su all won three of their respective individual events with All Star times.

Despite the impressive triple plays, the times on Saturday tended to be on the slower side for both teams.  This reporter suspects the chilly temperatures had something to do with that.

The Bannockburn Dolphins entered the pool at Lakelands full of spirit and hope with only a few signs of left over frosting from Cake Wars the night before.

Whether it was the sugar high from Friday night or the gentle drizzle, the team excelled in the first half of the meet and out performed expectation against a stronger team.

Yet without any new frosting to power the team in the second half and the weather starting to clear, the Dolphins could not keep pace and ended up losing by about 60 points to Lakelands.

As always, the meet starts with the under 12 IM. For the girls, Shifra Eskin took third and Katie MacIsaac grabbed fourth. Maya Lall was sixth. The boys were similar with Gideon Helf in second, Andrew O’Brien in fourth and Lucca Scott in fifth.

Lakelands won the boys 200 Medley relay with the team of Jack MacIsaac, Jack Blazes, Evan Steingass and Vince Steis taking second and the team of Owen Wassiliew, Alex Burbelo, Ethan Wendel and Alex Butman in third.

The girls team of Samantha Kline, Hannah Melrod, Jessie Kline and Kaili Gregory took first while the team of Caitlin Ryan, Alexa Crist , Bryna Steele and Gabriela Helf was third.

The strength of any team is always the under 8s.

For the boys in 25 free, Will Spooner and Max Kroloff were second and third. Aidan O’Brien was the next Dolphin, finishing ninth.  In backstroke, it was all Spooner with Will taking first and Alex fifth. James LeFaivre was sixth. Max Kroloff scored second in 25 breast.  For fly, Will, Max and Aidan were second, third and fifth.

The girls saw Darby LeFaivre finish first with an All Star time. Annie Kessner and May Clancy were the next Dolphin finishers, coming in sixth and seventh. Darby scored another All Star time with a win in 25 back. Annie and Clara Baisinger-Rosen were fifth and sixth. Ceila Noya was fourth in 25 breast. Darby got her third All Star time with a win in 25 fly.

The Dolphins did well in 9/10. For the boys, Andrew O’Brien won 50 free in an All Star time with Cole Wassiliew in third, Matthew Wu in seventh, Meyer Eskin in ninth and Jacob Seiberg in tenth. Andrew got his second win and second All Star time in 25 back. Matthew Wu was fourth and Jacob Seiberg was sixth.  For breast stroke, Cole Wassiliew won with Meyer Eskin in second.  Andrew O’Brien took home his third win and third All Star time in 25 fly.

Evelyn Wassiliew won for the girls in 50 free with Maya Lall in fourth, Sam MacIsaac in 10th and Lucy Lauren Caddell in 11th.  Evelyn and Maya were second and third in 25 back. Evelyn took a half second off her seed time.  In breast stroke, Maya Lall was fourth, Sam MacIsaac was fifth and Ella Scott was sixth. Evelyn took first in 25 fly.

While many if the 11/12 were in IM, the meat of their meet began with the 50 free. Gideon Helf took second and Tyler Crist was fourth. . Gideon was first in 50 back with Lucca Scott in third. Duncan Ryan, Morgan White and Alie Shafii were second, third and fourth in 50 breast. In fly, Lucca Scott took nearly a second off his seed time to finish second.

For the girls, Shifra Eskin took third with Katie MacIsaac dropping a second to secure fifth. Cecily McArdle was sixth and Colleen Zeugin was seventh. Katie MacIsaac took second in 50 back. Shifra got an All Star time with second place in 50 breast. In fly, Shifra was third.

In 13/14, the boys were strong. Jeffrey Su won 50 free in an All Star time with Ray Crist in third, Jack Blazes in fourth, Jack MacIsaac in fifth and Owen Wassiliew in seventh. In the IM, Jeffrey got first in an All Star time with Jack Blazes in second and Ray Crist in fourth.  Jeffrey also took first in 50 back with Jack Blazes and Ray in second and third.  Jack Blazes won in 50 breast with Jack MacIsaac in third. Jeffrey Su took first in 50 fly with an All Star time.

The girls in 50 free saw Katya Damskey take second, Danielle Lair Ferrari in third, Caitlin Ryan in fourth, Gabriela Helf in sixth, Naomi Seiberg in eighth, and Alexa Crist in 10th. Katya took first in the 100 IM.  Katya was second in the 50 back.  Alexa Crist had a great reach for the wall in 50 breast to take second place. Katya Damskey took first in 50 fly with an All Star time.

In the really big kids division (15-18), there were several strong performances. These kids really know how to motor.  Evan Steingass dropped 2.5 seconds to win 100 free while Jessie Kline, Bryna Steele and Hannah Melrod were second, third and fourth for the girls.

In 100 back, Even took second with Vince Steis in fourth and Alex Butman in sixth. For the girls, Jessie Kline took second with Bryna Steele in third. This same pattern continued in the 100 back with Evan taking second and Jessie taking second. In 100 breast, Alexander Burbelo was fourth and Hugo Burbelo was fifth. James Cobau was sixth. For the girls in 100 breast, Hannah Melrod took second and Samantha Kline was fifth.

The 15/18s ended with the 50 fly. Evan Steingass took second for the boys with Jessie Kline, Bryna Steele and Kaili Gregory swept the top three spots for the girls.

Relay Breaks Record at Relay Carnival

By Haydn the Dog
Dolphin Editor in Chief

Relay Carnival came very early in the season this year. Despite this, the team scored several excellent performances at this meet, which does count toward the end of season standings.

The team made a return trip to Lakelands for the meet, which meant we at least knew where everything was. Due to budget constraints at the Dolphin Times, we did not have our typical army of reporters covering the event.

Yet we did have a special, super-secret source who fed us the following:

We had one team record broken, for the 13-14 Boys 200 Medley Relay.  Jack MacIsaac (back), Jack Blazes (breast), Jeffrey Su (fly) and Ray Crist (free) broke the previous record set in 2009 by Andy Lair-Ferrari, Alex Spigler, Jackson Janezich and Jack Steingass.  They broke the record by nearly 3 seconds (new record is 2:10.83, prior 2:13.70).

Exceptional races also in three other relays:  Mixed 13-14 200 Freestyle Relay (Ray Crist, Katya Damseky, Danielle Lair Ferrari and Jeffrey Su), Girls Open 200 Medley Relay (Jessie Kline, Hannah Melrod, Katya Damskey and Bryna Steele) and Girls 13-14 200 Medley Relay (Caitlin Ryan, Alexa Crist, Katya Damskey and Danielle Lair Ferrari.)

We also would flag the Boys 13/14 200 Meter Medley Relay which featured Jack MacIsaac, Jack Blazes, Ray Crist and Jeffrey Su.

Olaf Takes the Cake in First Dolphin Cake War

By Walter Tu Kold
Dolphin Correspondent

Now this is the type of swimming this reporter can get into.

The pavilion at the Bannockburn Swim Club on Friday evening was transformed into the set of Cake Wars as teams of Dolphin swimmers battled to produce the cake that most appealed to the coaches.

Dolphin Times fully expected the winning cake to be a pictorial representation of the coaching staff or something related to the World Cup, which is of particular interest to a certain head coach.

But instead the winning team decided to pull on the heart strings with a rendering of Olaf, the snowman from Frozen. This reporter was impressed with the casual use of the vegetable in the cake. After all, a carrot nose for a snowman just looks normal.

Taking second place was Cheesy Backstroke with Sunny Day at the Bannockburn Pool grabbing third.

As near as this reporter could tell, none of the coaches or parents actually ate any of the cakes. That was probably wise as it appeared there was a penalty for the use of any type of proper hygiene.

We were especially impressed (or was it horrified) with the post-judging celebration by Owen Wassiliew, Cole Wassiliew and Tyler Crist. They immersed their faces in the blue frosting on the top of the cake.

To the relief of most, others did not follow in their foot steps. And we don’t believe anyone ate any of that cake despite its creative use of asparagus.

Editor’s Note: B Meet Coverage Next Week

By Haydn the Dog
Dolphin Editor in Chief

The staff at Dolphin Times was a bit overwhelmed this week so we did not produce our typical B meet highlights. Also, very few swimmers had seed times so it was hard to pick out big improvements.

That said, a few events to highlight from the contest against Carderock Springs:

·      Sawyer Makl  dropped nearly 5 seconds in 25 free.
·      Maddox Feldbaum dropped nearly four second in 50 free.
·      Colleen Zeugin dropped nearly 3.5 seconds in 50 free.
·      Tim Burke dropped nearly six seconds in 25 back.
·      Celia Noya dropped more than eight seconds in 25 back.
·      Aidan O’Brien dropped 6.5 seconds in 25 breast.

We didn’t have many seed times because of the thunderstorms that interrupted the Mars v. Venus meet. Now that many more swimmers have seed times, we will do more analysis for the next issue.3p]]]
