Dolphins Even Record With Big Win Saturday

By Doll Finn,
Senior Swim Correspondent

The Bannockburn Dolphins got a strong showing from the boys as the team swam its way to victory in Saturday’s meet against Inverness Forest.

The view from the press box overlooking the pool was impressive, but not nearly as impressive as the 12 and under boys who swept the 100 IM to open the meet. Jack MacIsaac, Owen Wassiliew, and Ray Crist finished within 2.37 seconds of each other. They were 1.57 seconds ahead of the top IF swimmer.

Inverness Forest countered our strong boys with a tandem of extremely fast girls. May Tondarvi is 12 and Julie Fan is 10. Both swam the IM in under 1:19, which means they were not just faster than the boys but they had All Star Times. Those two would keep IF in the meet for much of the day.

In the 200 Medley Relay, the Bannockburn boys led by Andy Lair Ferrari, Ryan Chitwood, John Janezich and Evan Steingass cruised to a nearly six second win. On the girls side, Bannockburn secured second and third with Elizabeth Fosburgh, Hannah Melrod, Maddie Alagia, and Bryna Steele in second and Nora Kelsall, Elena Palermo, Sammy Kline and Kellan Steel in third.

Going into the eight year old free style, the meet was close. Jacob Seiberg finished second and Ryan Kaplan fourth while Ella Scott won and Sam MacIsaac and Anna Cavanagh were third and fourth.

Things stayed tight with the 9/10s as Gideon Helf got an All Star Time but finished second in 34.96 while Andrew O’Brien was fourth. IF swimmer Julie Fan set an All Star Time to win, but Bannockburn girls Shifra Eskin and Katie MacIsaac mitigated the damage with strong second and third place finishes.

Jeffrey Su grabbed first for the 13/14 boys while Jessie Kline and Kaili Gregory took the top two slots for the girls. Jessie’s win put her 1.7 seconds ahead of the closest IF swimmer.

The under 12 boys finally opened up a margin for Bannockburn in the meet. Ray Crist won in an All Star Time of 31.03 followed by Jack MacIsaac and Owen Wassiliew. Tyler Crist, Ethan Wendel and Lucca Scott were fifth, sixth and seventh.

The girls kept the margin with Caitlin Ryan, Naomi Seiberg and Gabriella Helf taking second, third and fifth.

In 15/18, the boys lost the top spot to IF, but Evan Steingass, Andy Lair Ferrari, John Janezich, Ryan Chitwood and Jack Steingass took second to sixth. Elizabeth Fosburgh and Maddie Alagia were second and fourth in a girls competition that included three All Star Times.

That Bannockburn lead got a bit wider in the 13/14 IM as Jeffrey Su finished first with an All Star Time of 1:07.28, which was 1.69 seconds faster than his seed time. He was followed by Jack Blazes in second.

The girls were even more dominant. Jessica Kline, Kaili Gregory and Danielle Lair Ferrari swept the top three spots with the closest IF swimmer two seconds behind.

As the timers walked to the shallow end of the pool, the eight year olds prepared for back stroke. Jacob Seiberg won while on the girls side Maya Lall and Anna Cavanagh took first and second. Gideon Helf kept up the boy’s winning streak with a win in 9/10.

Andy Lair Ferrari and Elizabeth Fosburgh both set All Star Times with Andy finishing second in 15/18 Back and Elizabeth winning.

The 11/12 boys continued to sweep events with Jack MacIsaac, Owen Wassiliew and Ray Crist taking the top three spots with the nearest IF swimmer almost nine seconds behind.

Jessie Kline and Priscilla Felten took the top two 13/14 back spots with Jessie getting an All Star Time. Jeffrey Su won for the boys.

Intermission ended with the 15/18 IM. IF won both races, though Evan Steingass and Elizabeth Fosburgh both secured second place finishes.

Heading into breaststroke, the Dolphins had stretched the need to about 50 points but the meet was hardly over. Meyer Eskin had an All Star Time to win the boys under 8 by three seconds.

Then the girls took over. Maya Lall, Darby LeFaivre and Ann Cavanagh took the top three spots!

Shifra Eskin took the win for the girls 9/10 before Owen Wassiliew and Jack MacIsaac secured the top two spots in 11/12 with Owen getting an All Star Time. Jack Blazes set an All Star Time in the 13/14 win while Ryan Chitwood and Evan Steingass took first and second in 15/18.

Fly is where the Dolphins secured the win.

Jacob Seiberg and Maya Lall both won in the under 8 while Gideon Helf got an All Star Time in his second place 9/10 finish. Ray Crist took first for the 11/12 boys with Naomi Seiberg and Gabriella Helf tying for third for the girls. Jeffery Su and Jessie Kline won for the 13/14.

By the time we got the graduated relay – by far the best event of any meet – the outcome was pretty much decided. That said, the team of Gideon Helf, Ray Crist, Jeffrey Su and Jacob Seiberg won in 1:56.65. The team of Andrew O’Brien, Jack MacIsaac, Jack Blazes and Ryan Kaplan finished third.

For the girls, Shifra Eskin, Caitlin Ryan, Jessie Kline and Darby LeFaivre finished second while Katie MacIsaac, Naomi Seiberg, Kaili Gregory and Maya Lall were fourth.

The final event was hamburger eating as the team went to Five Guys for lunch. This correspondent was slightly delayed due to technical issues at automation – yes, these automation folks always have technical issues – yet we hear the competition to order the biggest burger and finish it the fastest was fierce. Please send any tips about the burger consumption to Haydn, our intern at the newsletter. He can be reached at haydnthedogseiberg@gmail.com.

Bannockburn Coaches Out Smart Carderock

By Flip Turn,
Junior Swim Correspondent

Never let it be said that Bannockburn doesn’t employ some of the smartest coaches in MCSL.

Wednesday’s B meet against Carderock featured a pool deck that was basking in the sunshine. Parents were seen fleeing for any bit of shade that could be found even if it meant mingling with the other team.

Head Coach Malena Lair-Ferrari and Assistant Coach Spenser Steele were not going to let that stop them from taking detailed notes on all of the Dolphin swimmers so they could focus on areas needing improvement.

The two commandeered the cooler with the volunteer waters in it and used it as a shaded oasis on the pool deck.

For those who don’t think the coaches work hard, all you need to do is see them up close at a meet. The notes that the two took on the swimmers were extensive enough to exhaust even this reporter.

While Malena and Spenser were studying the swimmer, the other coaches were hard at work with the swimmers themselves. Nick Hopkins, Kellan Steele, Andy Lair-Ferrari and Maddie Alagia work tirelessly in support of the kids.

BTW…. For those who want to see Malena as young girl or Spenser in a tux need to check out the coaches page on the Bannockburn Swim Team website.

Yes, this reporter gets easily distracted.

Back to the B Meet….. There were some impressive personal performances at the meet.

Two swimmers recorded improvements in a time of at least 20%.

Ceila Noya had a 20.49% improvement in her 25 free time while Jacob Seiberg had a 20.22% improvement in his 25 breast time.

All the swimmers below had at least a 5% improvement in their times in the strokes mentioned at the B Meet. We are sure there are more we could mention and we will continue to give shout outs about the B meet performances. But we wanted to highlight the following:

Dolphins occupy the Carderock pool for a big cheer before the start of the Wednesday meet.

Your correspondent is pulling all this data from a new report available via Team Unify. As with anything new, the risk for a mistake is high. But we hope we captured many of the truly great performances and we will strive to highlight even more in this week’s B meet.

Dolphins Fight But Fall Short Against Stonebridge

Dolphins Come Close in First A Meet of 2013

By Doll Finn,
Senior Swim Correspondent

The Bannockburn Dolphins put up a valiant fight on Saturday but fell to the Stonebridge Sharks in a hotly contested meet.

The final score was 414 for Stonebridge and 369 for the Dolphins.

As with all of our meet coverage, we will give a lot of results for free and IM and then pick out big improvements and top finishers in the other strokes. We are always likely to miss something. So if you see news breaking, email the Bannockburn Dolphin Times tip line at haydnthedogseiberg@gmail.com.

Our first A meet of the season began with Jessie Kline playing the national anthem on her recorder before the swimmers dived in for the 12 and under IM.

Jack MacIsaac finished second for the boys in 1:22.28, which was almost 8/10 of a second better than his seed time. Owen Wassiliew and Ray Crist were fourth and fifth with Ray taking a second off of his seed time. All the boys were topped by Stonebridge swimmer Jeffrey Qin, who finished in 1:13.55. For the girls, Naomi Seiberg finished third in 1:27.40 followed by Caitlin Ryan and Gabriela Helf in fifth and sixth.

Bannockburn came roaring back in Event 3 with the relay team of Andy Lair Ferrari, Ryan Chitwood, Evan Steingass and John Janezich winning the 200 meter Medley relay in 2:02.51, which is less than two seconds off the team record. Nick Hopkins, Max Palermo, Jack Steingass and James Cobau finished third. The girls relays finished second and fourth, with Elena Palermo, Hannah Melrod, Maddie Alagia and Bryna Steele getting second in 2:21.71 and Nora Kelsall, Kaili Gregory, Samantha Kline and Kellan Steele getting fourth.

As we approached the free style events, the meet was pretty close to tied and tension was brewing. No, the tension was no evident on the pool deck where the kids from both teams were smiling and cheering. Rather it was at the automation table where a software glitch allowed us to enter the data into the system but prevented us from printing out results that included the points awarded to each swimmer. We know how much everyone likes to see the results ASAP and we should be good to go for the next home meet.

Back on the pool deck, Jacob Seiberg led the eight and under boys in the 25 free, finishing fourth. Congratulation to William Kessner for taking almost three seconds off his time. For the girls, Darby LeFaivre, Ella Scott, Anna Cavanagh and Sam MacIsaac finished second, third, fifth and sixth.

Gideon Helf took a second off his time for the boy's 9/10 50 free, getting first and an all star time in 35.25. Andrew O'Brien, Duncan Ryan, Cole Wassiliew and Charlie Moellering finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth. For the girls, Shifra Eskin won in 38.37 with Katie MacIsaac in second. Event 9 brought us the boys 13/14 free, which Jeffrey Su won in 28.28, which is an All Star Time. Jack Blazes took seventh in 32.70. For the girls, Jessie Kline took second in 30.98, which was an All Star Time while Danielle Lair Ferrari was fourth and Kaili Gregory was fifth.

In the 11/12 50 free, Ray Crist, Jack MacIssac and Owen Wassiliew were second, third and fifth. Ray scored an All Star Time of 30.53. For the girls, Caitlin Ryan, Naomi Seiberg, Gabriella Helf, Alexa Crist and Sarah Cobau finished third, fifth, seventh ninth, and 10th. Then the 15 to 18 year olds took over in the 100 free, with Evan Steingass getting an All Star Time in 57.61, followed closed in second by Andy Lair Ferrari and John Janezich in third. That's right, the boys swept positions one to three. Nice job. For the girls, Maddie Alagia was second and Bryna Steel was fifth.

Everyone knows that the 13/14 IM is followed by backstroke. And that is just what happened.

Jeffrey Su won the IM in 1:08.97, which is an All Star Time while Jessie Kline won for the girls in 1:17.75.

In backstroke, we start with the eight and unders. Jacob Seiberg took third in 27.09. For the girls, Maya Lall finished second in 25.40 while Anna Cavanagh took 1.3 seconds off her seed time to finish third. In the 9/10s, Gideon Helf took second in 20.65 while Evelyn Wassiliew took second for the girls in 23.59. In 15 to 18 year olds, Andy Lair Ferrari and Jon Janezich took first and second in 1:08.19 and 1.09.65. Jack MacIsaac, Ray Crist and Owen Wassiliew took second, third and fourth for the boys 11/12 while Naomi Seiberg took third. In 13/14, Jeffrey Su finished second in an All Star Time of 33.50. He was 1/10 of a second from first. Jessie Kline won for the girls in an All Star Time of 35.22. Katya Damskey shaved three seconds off her seed time to finish third.

The 15/18 IM is always an amazing event to watch. These kids just fly though the water. For the boys, Bannockburn swept the top three spots with Evan Steingass, Andy Lair Ferrari and John Janezich. Evan got an All Star Time of 1:06.75. Maddie Alagia was the top finisher for the girls in 1:18.62.

That brings us to breast stroke.

As always, the eight year olds went first. Meyer Eskin was one of only two swimmers to swim legal. He finished second in 24.68, which is an All Star Time. The girls had fewer DQ issues on both teams. Maya Lall won in 28.91. For 9/10, Andrew O'Brien won in 23.94, which was a second faster than second place. Shifra Eskin got an All Star Time for the girls with a first place finish in 22.19. In 11/12, Jack MacIsaac and Owen Wassiliew got All Star Times while finishing second and third. Caitlin Ryan was the top finisher for the girls with a second place showing in 46.89.  Jack Blazes won for the boys in 13/14 in 39.31 while Katya Damskey was to top Bannockburn finisher for the girls with a second place showing. Ryan Chitwood and Evan Steingass finished one-two for the boys 15/18 while Hannah Melrod was the top finisher for the Bannockburn girls.

On butterfly, Stronebridge was strong for the eight and under boys with Jacob Seiberg as the top Bannockburn finisher. Sam MacIsaac and Maya Lall finished first and second for the girls. In 9/10 Gideon Helf finished tied for first with an All Star Time of 18.44. That's right sports fans. We had a tie for first place. Andrew O'Brien and Charlie Moellering were third and fourth. For the girls, Shifra Eskin and Evelyn Wassiliew were first and second. Ray Christ was the top 11/12 boy in fly in 36.94 while Naomi Seiberg was the top girl in 39.82. No shock for the boys 13/14 as Jeffrey Su set another All Star Time with a first place finish in 30.84. Katya Damskey and Jessie Kline were strong with first and second for the girls. In 15/18, John Janezich and Andy Lair Ferrari got All Star Times and finished first and third while Maddie Alagia was the top girl with a third place finish.

Our next issue with focus heavily on what is this reporter's favorite event, the 175 Freestyle Graduated Relay. This is always the event that brings everyone to the edge of the pool to scream and yell. And nothing is more exciting than watching the eight year olds swim those final 25 meters. The Bannockburn boys finished second and third while the girls were second and fourth. The real excitement was in the girls event as Darby LeFaivre and Amy Qin were neck and neck the entire way down the pool. Darby was barely out-touched at the wall in a very exciting finish.

As always, there is no way to capture all of the achievements in this meet. Every swimmer was impressive. And we will try to capture more of the individual improvements in future issues.

Two, Four, Six, Eight; Dolphins Are Great

By Oooh Sasassa,
Junior Swim Correspondent

Windows shattered, dogs howled and neighbors hunkered down in their homes on Tuesday night when the Bannockburn Dolphins embarked on the inaugural practice cheer night.

Heard as far away at Mohican and Palisades, Bannockburn swimmers sang about hitting folks on the head with a kielbasa as well as all of the traditional standards.

Those cheers were put into practice at the first A meet where Bannockburn swimmers screamed until they didn’t have any voices left.

Boys v. Girls Practice Meet Results in a Tie!!

By Doll Finn
Senior Swim Correspondent

We don’t have a winner.

The boys faced off against the girls on Wednesday night at the annual Mars v. Venus meet. Both genders declared victory, but due to technical issues the final score was 0 to 0.

That’s right. It was a tie.

It may be true that some believe that a manual score of the meet gave the win to the boys. And it may also be true that there were more boy swimmers there than girls swimmers.

Yet what counts is what is in the computer system. And automation reports that the score was zero to zero.

Time Trials Bode Well for 2013 Season

Bannockburn Swim Team
Dolphin Times
Issue 2 (June 9, 2013)

Boys Rule! No wait, Girls Rule! Who Rules?

Find out the answer to this and other exciting questions on Wednesday with the annual Mars vs. Venus swim meet.

Often referred to as the Bannockburn vs. Bannockburn meets or the Boys vs. Girls meet, this B-style meet pits the male Dolphins against the female Dolphins for pool bragging rights.

As always, all official meet information comes from the coaches and in the official team emails. But nothing says the newsletter cannot pump up one of the more fun meets of the year.

Olympians Make Bannockburn Their Home

By Flip Turn
Junior Swim Correspondent

Ryan Lochte, Chloe Sutton, Tyler McGill and Katie Ledecky now reside at the Bannockburn Swim Club.

Sort of.

Thanks to the Cloptons – a swim team family that has relocated to Swampscott, Massachusetts – the club has a Division G t-shirt that Ryan Lochte signed. And Gabriella Helf donated a Bannockburn swim cap that Sutton, McGill and Ledecky signed.

Many thanks to both families.

The shirt and cap are framed together and are hanging by the check in desk at the pool.

Time Trials Reveals Bannockburn Really Fast

By Doll Finn
Senior Swim Correspondent

Time trials went off Saturday morning in humid conditions with a ton of eight and under swimmers dominating the lanes and posting some really fast times during our first meet of the season.

With Tom Helf at the sound machine, the parents warmed up to lots of music that the kids never heard of. This correspondent was quite happy with the selections, especially as the play list did not include Gangnam Style by Psy. (Why do I think we will hear that song regardless at Karaoke night.

Overall, the meet seems to bode well for the season as there are at least three strong swimmers in every stroke in every age group. In some age groups, the competition will be fierce.

Your newsletter aims to get lot of names in print and we will focus in future issues on those swimmers with big improvements in their seed times as well as on the top finishers. This is so we can get a diverse group of swimmers in the newsletter each week. For this issue, there are no seed times. So we are concentrating on the top times.  That will change with future issues.

And please remember that the newsletter will occasionally miss a milestone event, spell a name wrong, or get a number wrong. This is all electronic and all mistakes are easy to fix. Plus we welcome guest columns from any and all takers.

As with every season, the big unknown are the under 8 swimmers. We tend to have a lot in this age groups and the times can be very unpredictable and huge improvements over the course of the season are common.

We had one male under 8 and one female under 8 finish first in three of the four strokes. Not only that, but they also each won the same three strokes – free, back and fly. Those top two are Jacob Seiberg and Darby LeFaivre. Those two should give us a strong finish in the progressive relays!

The meet started with the 12 and under IM. For the boys, Owen Wassiliew led the way in 1:25.39. Rounding out the top 5 were Ray Crist, Gideon Helf, Lucca Scott, and Ali Shafi.

For the girls, Naomi Seiberg took first in 1:27.72. This pits her against Owen for bragging rights in the Mars vs. Venus meet. Rounding out the top five were Caitlin Ryan, Gabriela Helf, Shifra Eskin and Maya Lall.

In the free style events, Jacob Seiberg won 8 and under 25 meter in 20.25 followed by Ryan Kaplan and Meyer Eskin. For the girls, Darby LeFairve won in 21.04 followed by Ella Scott and Maya Lall.

For the 9-10s , Gideon Helf took first in the 50 meter in 38.14 followed by Andrew O’Brien and Cole Wassiliew. For the girls, Shifra Eskin won in 40.90 followed by Evelyn Wassiliew and Gevvie Johnson.

In 11-12s, Ray Crist took first in 32.13 followed by Owen Wassiliew and Ali Shafii. Caitlin Ryan won for the girls in 33.98 followed by Naomi Seiberg and Gabriela Helf.

For the 13/14s, it was Jack Blazes in 32.27 followed by Alex Butman and Andrew Ford. Jessica Kline took first for the girls in 31.18 followed by Katya Damskey and Danielle Lair Ferrari.

The really big kids were once again really fast with their 100s. Andy Lair Ferrari won in 58.94 followed by Evan Steingass and Nick Hopkins. For the girls, Maddie Alagia won in 1:07.29 followed by Bryna Steele and Nora Kelsall.

The full meet results are available online so we are not going to go through every stroke. In future newsletters, we will focus extensively on a specific stroke and note major improvements by swimmers in any stroke.

That said, we will go through the top swimmer in each of the three other strokes. For under 8, Jacob Seiberg and Darby LeFaivre won back and fly while Meyer Eskin and Maya Lall won breast.

In 9/10, Evelyn Wassiliew and Gideon Helf won back and fly while Shifra Eskin and Gideon Helf won breast.

For the 11/12s, Ray Crist and Naomi Seiberg took first in back and fly while Owen Wassiliew and Naomi Seiberg won breast.

In the 13/14s, Jack Blazes and Jessica Kline won backstroke and fly while Jack Blazes and Katya Damskey won breast.

For the 15 to 18 year olds, Evan Steingass finished first in the 100 IM, the 100 Breast, and the 100 fly, while Maddie Alagia won for the girls in IM and fly. We did not run all of the 15 to 18 year events.

That is a wrap from time trials. Our hope is to publish before the first A meet with Mars vs. Venus notes.

Until then, swim fast.

Newsletter Returns; Dolphins Prepare for 2013

Welcome back to the Bannockburn Dolphin Swimmers. This is your official newsletter, which is returning after a short hiatus.

The newsletter is more about fun, records and results than it is about critical information.

Critical information about the meets and practices will come via email from the coaches as well as in the weekly team email.

I hope to have fun with the newsletter and to include the names of as many swimmers as possible in each edition. That said, I can always miss something so if you see a swimmer do something extraordinary then shoot me an email at jaretseiberg@yahoo.com. And let me know if I missed a milestone or made a mistake so we can get the record straight in the next edition.

Bannockburn Records To Fall As Many Strong 2012 Dolphins Eligible to Swim This Summer

By Doll Finn
Senior Swim Correspondent

We haven’t had a meet yet in 2013 but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some catching up to do from the 2012 summer season any many swimmers last year set top 25 age group times for Bannockburn.

In fact, there were so many new top 25 swimmers that things look good for the Dolphins, which start the summer ranked second in Division G.

Northwest Branch is the top ranked team in the division. Below Bannockburn are Daleview, Stronebridge, Inverness Forest and Rock Creek.

Of course, hitting a top 25 time in 2012 does not guarantee victory in 2013. Many are moving up in their age group and some are off to other endeavors or have moved from the community. Still, it is still a great indication of the team’s strength.

8 and Under

Swimmers setting top 25 times last year in the 8 and under include Andrew O’Brien for the 25 free and the 25 back. For under 8 boys breast stroke, two top 25 swimmers return. They are Meyer Eskin and Cole Wassiliew. Butterfliers are Andrew O’Brien and Charlie Moellering.

For the girls, Evelyn Wassiliew had a top 25 in breast and butterfly.

9 and 10

When we move on to the under 10 top 25 record holders, we have Lucca Scott in the backstroke and butterfly and Shifra Eskin in breast stroke.

11 and 12

The under 12 swimmers are loaded with top 25 times from 2012.

These include Jeffrey Su who set a top 25 times in free, back, breast, fly and the IM. All but the breast stroke are team records. And that breast stroke top team time ever was set in 2012 by Jack Blazes, who also has top 25 team times in free, back, fly and IM. Following those two is Ray Crist with top 25 team times from 2012 in free, back and fly. Owen Wassiliew has a top 25 in breast and fly while Ethan Wendel has a top 25 in fly.

The 2012 under 12 girls include top 25 times from Katya Damskey in free, breast, fly and IM. Naomi Seiberg has 2012 top 25 times in back, fly and IM. Danielle “Cookie” Lair Ferrari had a 2012 top 25 in fly.

13 and 14

When it comes to the 13 to 14 year old girls, all sorts of records were broken. Bryna Steele had a top 25 time in free, back, breast, fly and IM. Jessie Kline has top 25 times in free, back, fly and IM. Kaili Gregory had a top 25 in free while Hannah Melrod had a top 25 in free, back, and breast.

For the 13-14 boys, Peter Fosburgh scored top 25 times in free, back, fly and IM while Max Palerno was top 25 in free, back, breast and IM. Paul Rock had a top 25 in IM.

15 to 18

In the top age group of 15 to 18, many records fell. On the girls side, Elizabeth Fosburgh scored top 25 in free and back. Elizabeth still has top 25 times in IM, fly and breast from prior years.

Nora Kelsall had top 25 times in free and back while Samantha Kline has top 25 times in back and fly.

For the boys, Andy Lair Ferrari is top 25 in free, back, fly, and IM.  John Janezich scores top 25 in free, back and IM while Evan Steingass is top 25 in free, back, breast, fly, and IM. Ryan Chitwood is top 25 in back and breast, and Nick Hopkins is top 25 in breast.

Apologies in advance if I missed anyone. I pulled all the data from pool website.

By my count, that makes 30 swimmers in 2012 who had a top 25 fastest Bannockburn swim time. That’s pretty impressive and leaves one pretty optimistic about 2013.

As for 2013, look for the latest edition on the Tuesday after every Saturday meet. We will include the highlights of the A meet but also will include some of the standout performances from the B meet. The goal each week is to give credit to as many kids as possible.

And yes, we welcome guest correspondents. So if Shelly (or any real people) want to add some color from one of the meets, email it along for inclusion in the next edition.
