Dolphins Come Close in First A Meet of 2013

By Doll Finn,

The Bannockburn Dolphins put up a valiant fight on Saturday but fell to the Stonebridge Sharks in a hotly contested meet.

The final score was 414 for Stonebridge and 369 for the Dolphins.

As with all of our meet coverage, we will give a lot of results for free and IM and then pick out big improvements and top finishers in the other strokes. We are always likely to miss something. So if you see news breaking, email the Bannockburn Dolphin Times tip line at haydnthedogseiberg@gmail.com.

Our first A meet of the season began with Jessie Kline playing the national anthem on her recorder before the swimmers dived in for the 12 and under IM.

Jack MacIsaac finished second for the boys in 1:22.28, which was almost 8/10 of a second better than his seed time. Owen Wassiliew and Ray Crist were fourth and fifth with Ray taking a second off of his seed time. All the boys were topped by Stonebridge swimmer Jeffrey Qin, who finished in 1:13.55. For the girls, Naomi Seiberg finished third in 1:27.40 followed by Caitlin Ryan and Gabriela Helf in fifth and sixth.

Bannockburn came roaring back in Event 3 with the relay team of Andy Lair Ferrari, Ryan Chitwood, Evan Steingass and John Janezich winning the 200 meter Medley relay in 2:02.51, which is less than two seconds off the team record. Nick Hopkins, Max Palermo, Jack Steingass and James Cobau finished third. The girls relays finished second and fourth, with Elena Palermo, Hannah Melrod, Maddie Alagia and Bryna Steele getting second in 2:21.71 and Nora Kelsall, Kaili Gregory, Samantha Kline and Kellan Steele getting fourth.

As we approached the free style events, the meet was pretty close to tied and tension was brewing. No, the tension was no evident on the pool deck where the kids from both teams were smiling and cheering. Rather it was at the automation table where a software glitch allowed us to enter the data into the system but prevented us from printing out results that included the points awarded to each swimmer. We know how much everyone likes to see the results ASAP and we should be good to go for the next home meet.

Back on the pool deck, Jacob Seiberg led the eight and under boys in the 25 free, finishing fourth. Congratulation to William Kessner for taking almost three seconds off his time. For the girls, Darby LeFaivre, Ella Scott, Anna Cavanagh and Sam MacIsaac finished second, third, fifth and sixth.

Gideon Helf took a second off his time for the boy's 9/10 50 free, getting first and an all star time in 35.25. Andrew O'Brien, Duncan Ryan, Cole Wassiliew and Charlie Moellering finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth. For the girls, Shifra Eskin won in 38.37 with Katie MacIsaac in second. Event 9 brought us the boys 13/14 free, which Jeffrey Su won in 28.28, which is an All Star Time. Jack Blazes took seventh in 32.70. For the girls, Jessie Kline took second in 30.98, which was an All Star Time while Danielle Lair Ferrari was fourth and Kaili Gregory was fifth.

In the 11/12 50 free, Ray Crist, Jack MacIssac and Owen Wassiliew were second, third and fifth. Ray scored an All Star Time of 30.53. For the girls, Caitlin Ryan, Naomi Seiberg, Gabriella Helf, Alexa Crist and Sarah Cobau finished third, fifth, seventh ninth, and 10th. Then the 15 to 18 year olds took over in the 100 free, with Evan Steingass getting an All Star Time in 57.61, followed closed in second by Andy Lair Ferrari and John Janezich in third. That's right, the boys swept positions one to three. Nice job. For the girls, Maddie Alagia was second and Bryna Steel was fifth.

Everyone knows that the 13/14 IM is followed by backstroke. And that is just what happened.

Jeffrey Su won the IM in 1:08.97, which is an All Star Time while Jessie Kline won for the girls in 1:17.75.

In backstroke, we start with the eight and unders. Jacob Seiberg took third in 27.09. For the girls, Maya Lall finished second in 25.40 while Anna Cavanagh took 1.3 seconds off her seed time to finish third. In the 9/10s, Gideon Helf took second in 20.65 while Evelyn Wassiliew took second for the girls in 23.59. In 15 to 18 year olds, Andy Lair Ferrari and Jon Janezich took first and second in 1:08.19 and 1.09.65. Jack MacIsaac, Ray Crist and Owen Wassiliew took second, third and fourth for the boys 11/12 while Naomi Seiberg took third. In 13/14, Jeffrey Su finished second in an All Star Time of 33.50. He was 1/10 of a second from first. Jessie Kline won for the girls in an All Star Time of 35.22. Katya Damskey shaved three seconds off her seed time to finish third.

The 15/18 IM is always an amazing event to watch. These kids just fly though the water. For the boys, Bannockburn swept the top three spots with Evan Steingass, Andy Lair Ferrari and John Janezich. Evan got an All Star Time of 1:06.75. Maddie Alagia was the top finisher for the girls in 1:18.62.

That brings us to breast stroke.

As always, the eight year olds went first. Meyer Eskin was one of only two swimmers to swim legal. He finished second in 24.68, which is an All Star Time. The girls had fewer DQ issues on both teams. Maya Lall won in 28.91. For 9/10, Andrew O'Brien won in 23.94, which was a second faster than second place. Shifra Eskin got an All Star Time for the girls with a first place finish in 22.19. In 11/12, Jack MacIsaac and Owen Wassiliew got All Star Times while finishing second and third. Caitlin Ryan was the top finisher for the girls with a second place showing in 46.89.  Jack Blazes won for the boys in 13/14 in 39.31 while Katya Damskey was to top Bannockburn finisher for the girls with a second place showing. Ryan Chitwood and Evan Steingass finished one-two for the boys 15/18 while Hannah Melrod was the top finisher for the Bannockburn girls.

On butterfly, Stronebridge was strong for the eight and under boys with Jacob Seiberg as the top Bannockburn finisher. Sam MacIsaac and Maya Lall finished first and second for the girls. In 9/10 Gideon Helf finished tied for first with an All Star Time of 18.44. That's right sports fans. We had a tie for first place. Andrew O'Brien and Charlie Moellering were third and fourth. For the girls, Shifra Eskin and Evelyn Wassiliew were first and second. Ray Christ was the top 11/12 boy in fly in 36.94 while Naomi Seiberg was the top girl in 39.82. No shock for the boys 13/14 as Jeffrey Su set another All Star Time with a first place finish in 30.84. Katya Damskey and Jessie Kline were strong with first and second for the girls. In 15/18, John Janezich and Andy Lair Ferrari got All Star Times and finished first and third while Maddie Alagia was the top girl with a third place finish.

Our next issue with focus heavily on what is this reporter's favorite event, the 175 Freestyle Graduated Relay. This is always the event that brings everyone to the edge of the pool to scream and yell. And nothing is more exciting than watching the eight year olds swim those final 25 meters. The Bannockburn boys finished second and third while the girls were second and fourth. The real excitement was in the girls event as Darby LeFaivre and Amy Qin were neck and neck the entire way down the pool. Darby was barely out-touched at the wall in a very exciting finish.

As always, there is no way to capture all of the achievements in this meet. Every swimmer was impressive. And we will try to capture more of the individual improvements in future issues.

Go Dolphins!

Two, Four, Six, Eight; Dolphins Are Great

By Oooh Sasassa,

Windows shattered, dogs howled and neighbors hunkered down in their homes on Tuesday night when the Bannockburn Dolphins embarked on the inaugural practice cheer night.

Heard as far away at Mohican and Palisades, Bannockburn swimmers sang about hitting folks on the head with a kielbasa as well as all of the traditional standards.

Those cheers were put into practice at the first A meet where Bannockburn swimmers screamed until they didn’t have any voices left.

Boys v. Girls Practice Meet Results in a Tie!!

By Doll Finn

We don’t have a winner.

The boys faced off against the girls on Wednesday night at the annual Mars v. Venus meet. Both genders declared victory, but due to technical issues the final score was 0 to 0.

That’s right. It was a tie.

It may be true that some believe that a manual score of the meet gave the win to the boys. And it may also be true that there were more boy swimmers there than girls swimmers.

Yet what counts is what is in the computer system. And automation reports that the score was zero to zero.
