Dolphins Finish Strong; Fall to Flower Valley

By Doll Finn
Senior Dolphin Correspondent

The Bannockburn Dolphins were stronger in the second half of the meet against Flower Valley but could not overcome the half time deficit to bring home a win in the final A meet of the 2014 season.

The half time gap was surprising as the Dolphins opened strong and had some great swims.

It was unfortunate for the Dolphins that the entire meet was not 9/10 25 breast stroke. Andrew O’Brien, Meyer Eskin and Cole Wassiliew finish first through third and all had All Star times.

Yet we get ahead of ourselves………

After the two IMs that start each meet the Dolphins had a 17 to 15 edge in the meet. Gideon Helf, Andrew O’Brien and Lucca Scott took second through fourth for nine points while Shifra Eskin won for the girls with Katie MacIsaac in fourth and Evelyn Wassiliew in sixth. That got eight more points.

Yet Flower Valley retook the lead in the 200 meter relays. For the boys, the team of Jack MacIsaac, Jack Steingass, John Janzich and Vince Steis took second with Owen Wassiliew, Jack Blazes, Ray Crist and Alex Butman in fourth. The girls also went second and fourth with Jessie Kline, Alexa Crist, Byrna Steele and Caitlin Ryan  in second and Naomi Seiberg, Marianna Pennybacker, Gabriella Helf and Sarah Cobau in fourth.

Looking at the under 8 boys, there were some strong swims at the meet. Will Spooner and Max Kroloff took second and third in 25 free. Aidan O’Brien dropped time while Anthony Noya, James LeFaivre and Kai Setty all swam close to their seed times.

Will won 25 back in an All Star time with Alex Spooner in fifth and James in sixth. Those trends continue with breast and fly. Max won in 25 breast with Aidan in third and James in sixth. For fly, Will won in an All Star time with Max dropping time to finish second and Aidan dropping time to take sixth.

For the under 8 girls, Darby LeFaivre continued her winning ways. She took first in 25 free. Clara Baisinger-Rosen was seventh and Taylor Pyle took eighth. Annie Kessner, Celia Noya and Nadia Lall too 10th, 11th and 12th with Celia dropping close to six seconds and Nadia dropping 1.5 seconds.

Clara took third in 25 back, dropping almost four seconds. Taylor and Annie took fifth and sixth. Darby took first in 25 breast in an All Star time with Caroline Jensen in dropping four second for fifth and Taylor dropping more than 3 seconds for sixth. Darby won 25 fly in an All Star time with Nadia dropping seven seconds for fifth.

As we shift to the 9/10 age group, Cole Wassiliew took second for the boys in 50 free. Jacob Seiberg was the next Dolphin, finishing eighth. Matthew Wu was ninth, Eskin Meyer was 10th and Ben Baisinger-Lee was 11th.

Andrew O’Brien took first in 25 back in an All Star time with Matthew in fourth and Jacob in sixth. Andrew got his third win of the day with an All Star time in 25 fly. He also dropped time. Cole dropped time for fifth and Matthew was sixth.

On the girl’s side, Evelyn Wassiliew took third in 50 free by dropping time. Maya Lall was sixth, Ella Scott was ninth, Sam MacIsaac was 10th and Anna-Louise Cobau was 11th.

On 25 back, Evelyn took second and dropped over a second. Maya and Sam took fifth and sixth. Maya dropped time in 25 breast with a third. Ella and Anna-Louise also dropped time for fifth and sixth. Evelyn took third in fly with Sam in fifth.

In 11/12 boys, Gideon Helf in the 50 free took first and dropped half a second. Lucca Scott was fourth, Tyler Crist was eighth, Ali Shafii was ninth, Duncan Ryan was 11th and Morgan White was 12th.

Lucca took second in 50 back with Damian Molineus and fifth and Duncan in sixth. Gideon won 50 breast with Morgan in fifth and Ali in sixth. Gideon also won 50 fly with Lucca in third and Duncan in fifth.

On the girls side, Shifra continued her winning ways with first in 50 free. Katie MacIsaac took fourth and Cecily McArdle was seventh. In 50 back, Katie took first and dropped time with Cecily dropping time for fifth and Colleen Zeugin in sixth. Shifra took first in 50 breast in an All Star time with Katie in fourth and Colleen in sixth. In fly, Shifra took first first and dropped half a second. Collen was fifth, two second faster than her seed time.

The Dolphins tend to be strong in 13/14, but so was Flower Valley. Despite an All Star Time, Jeffrey Su finished second in 50 free. Jonathan Rufino took fourth, Jack Blazes took fifth, Jack MacIsaac took sixth, Ray Crist was eighth and Owen Wassiliew was 11th.

Jeffrey took third in the 100 IM despite an All Star time. Jack Blazes was fourth and Jack MacIsaac took more than a second off for sixth.

Jeffrey got second in back in an All Star time with Jack Blazes in fourth and Jonathan Rufino in fifth.  Jack Blazes scored an All Star time and second place in 50 breast with Jack MacIsaac in fourth and Owen Wassiliew in fifth. This trend continued with 50 fly with Jeffrey in second in an All Star time and almost half a second better than his seed time. Ray Crist dropped more than a second for fourth with Jonathan taking fifth a second better than his seed time.

The girls had a strong 50 free with Katya Damskey taking first and Danielle Lair-Ferrari in second. Caitlin Ryan was fifth, Gabriella Helf was ninth, Alexa Crist was 11th and Naomi Seiberg was 12th.

Katya won the 100 IM with Danielle in fourth and Caitlin in sixth. Katya’s then won the 50 back with Danielle in fifth and Caitlin in sixth. Alexa Crist took second in 50 breast with Caitlin in third and Gabriella in sixth, though she dropped more than a second off her seed time.

Katya got her final individual win of the day in 50 fly with an All Star time. Danielle was fourth and Gabriella was sixth.

The really big kids often have some of the toughest battles. John Janezich took first in 100 free with Evan Steingass in third, Vince Steis in eighth. Alex Butman, James Cobau and Alex Burbelo all swam up.

John won in 100 back with Evan in third and Vince in fifth.  John got another individual win with first in 100 IM. Vince was fifth.  Evan Steingass took first in 100 breast with Hugo Burbelo dropping time for fifth and Alex Burbelo 2/100 of a second behind him. We would note that Alex and Hugo tied in this event last year. It basically looked as if they were engaged in synchronized swimming. This reporter had no idea which brother beat the other until the times were posted.

In 15/18 50 fly, John Janezich got another first with an All Star time. Vince Steingass was fifth and Ethan Wendel took sixth.

The 15/18 girls showed how every millisecond counts. Bryna Steele beat Jessie Kline by 1/100 of a second to take fourth in 100 free. Marianna Pennybacker swam up for eighth as Sarah Cobau in 10th. Jesse, Bryna and Marianna finished fourth, fifth and sixth in 100 IM and 100 back.

Sarah took fourth in 100 breast with Marianna in fifth. Both swam up and kicked butt. In 50 fly, Jessie took second with Bryna in fifth and Sarah in sixth.

The meet ended with the two most exciting races in swimming. For the boys 175 graduated relay, it came down to the eight year olds in the final length. Will Spooner may not have taken a single breath, but he powered stroke to stroke with the Flower Valley swimmer until the final reach for the wall when Will got there 17/100 of a second faster. Putting Will in this spot were Andrew O’Brien, Gideon Helf and Jeffrey Su. The team of Cole Wassiliew, Lucca Scott, Jonathan Rufino and Max Kroloff took third by just under a second over Flower Valley.

The girls race was not as close. Darby LeFaivre cruised to a five second win for the team that consisted of Evelyn Wassiliew, Shifra Eskin and Katya Damskey. This was a big win for the girl’s relay. The team of Maya Lall, Katie MacIsaac, Danielle Lair Ferrari and Clara Baisinger-Rosen took fourth.

The final score was 453 to 339.
